Oh Gravity Falls, a new obsession in our household. And when I say obsession, I mean we have been watching episodes over and over again for at least the last 2 months. Keep in mind, this is a 2 seasons only series, so by now we are pretty familiar with the show. I think I have watched the entire series a few times already. So, I decided to share about this show since my son’s fascination with the show has honestly rubbed on me too.
Gravity Falls is a Disney channel series that aired for the first time in 2015. Yes, we are very late to the game here, haha. From director Alex Hirsch, this show follows the adventures of two kids, Dipper and his twin sister Mabel, during their summer away with their great-uncle Stan. Stan lives in a town called Gravity Falls, which the shows places somewhere in Oregon, United States. The mysterious town turns out to be full of supernatural creatures and endearing characters who fill each episode with a mix of adventure and a Sci-Fi feel. Although this is a Disney Channel show for kids, I’d say the show touches on a few topics that may be lost on the younger kids. Like Dipper’s difficulty to interact with the older kids or Soos relationship with his dad. Yet the overall feeling of the show is one of playfulness and adventure. From gnomes to Unicorns, Gravity Falls sure delivers a wide range of interesting creatures that fascinate kids like my son, who is four. I have to admit, for me, one of the biggest attractions from the show is Kristen Schaal’s voice as “Mabel”. Her funny but raspy voice complements her character’s personality and is just very entertaining to listen to. But my son’s favorite part, the music. This “Sci-Fi like” cartoon brings together the sounds of a great adventure kids show and a classic Sci-Fi. He loves to dance to the theme song and some of the background songs throughout the show will remind you of every 90s Sci-Fi movie.
Overall, the show is a fun kids show. Like any other show, there are characters traits that may not be the preferred for some parents but the show delivers a sweet story. One that is complete in two seasons. It shows a faulty world that seems to go more in hand with the real one. The sibling relationships are emphasized both in the kids and in the adult characters. Something particularly nice for kids with siblings of similar ages. I would recommend to give it a try if you are looking for something different to watch with your kids. This is a kids show that is fun for adults too and that all Sci-Fi lovers will enjoy. The shows two seasons are currently available on Hulu. You can also catch the re-runs on Disney Channel (although I would recommend to watch the episodes in order, the story is interesting and worth watching in order).
